Inter-state car lifters’ gang busted

The Punjab Police on Thursday busted an inter-state gang of car lifters,arrested nine accused and recovered 51 cars worth Rs 4.7 crore from their possession.

The Punjab Police on Thursday busted an inter-state gang of car lifters,arrested nine accused and recovered 51 cars worth Rs 4.7 crore from their possession. The gang was active for the last three years.

Director General of Police (DGP) PS Gill,addressing the media,said two of the co-accused have also been arrested by the Delhi Police. One of the accused,Chetan Bakshi,is a proclaimed offender with a number of vehicle theft and snatching cases pending against him. Another accused Prabhsharan is final year law drop out from Panjab University,while Rajwinder Singh is the son of a Punjab Police head constable.

The gang stole vehicles,mostly luxury models,from Punjab,Delhi Haryana and even far off states such as Karnataka and Gujarat.

“Often the vehicles were stolen on demand and procured from co-accused in different cities. The accused procured documents of total loss vehicles from insurance companies and got the engine and chassis number punched on the stolen vehicles from Uttar Pradesh,” Gill said.

“Many of the vehicles recovered from the accused have been wrongly transferred to other states with the help of officials in different district transport offices. Some vehicles were registered on forged documents. The police have also recovered a printer,laptop and scanner used for the purpose,’’ he added.

All the buyers of the stolen vehicles will be interrogated,Gill said,adding,“All the owners would be traced and court permission taken to free the vehicles”.

Claiming that it was one of the biggest recoveries of stolen vehicles in Punjab,Gill said that majority of cars were high end models and had been sold off to buyers at throw away prices.

Also,action will be taken against the officials of District Transport Offices where the stolen vehicles were registered,he added. Gill said that the police is compiling a data of all the stolen vehicles in the state and soon high resolution cameras will be put on toll barriers on the highways to keep a tab on the vehicles.
