A 29-year-old woman committed suicide on Sunday by setting herself on fire after pouring kerosene,reportedly following an argument with her husband.

Kajal,a mother of four,had been married to Kabul Singh for the last 11 years but they never had cordial relations,said the police. A case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC has been registered against Kabul.

Rs 6,200-crore loans sanctioned for Punjab power projects
For providing impetus to electricity generation in Punjab,Power Finance Corporation (PFC) has sanctioned loans of Rs 6,218 crore for various projects,being developed by both private and public sector units. The PFC has already disbursed Rs 2,484 crore from the sanctioned loans for various power projects and schemes in Punjab,sources said. The loan sanctions include Rs 1,863 crore for the 168-MW Shahpurkandi and Rs 340 crore for the 600-MW Ranjit Sagar Dam hydro-electric power project. Punjab has total installed capacity of 6,857.71 MW in a mix of coal-based,hydro,renewable,gas-based and nuclear plants,with nearly 50 per cent in the coal-fired plants. However,the private sector has a miniscule share in the total power generation in the state with only 57 MW,while the state sector has 5,074 MW capacity. Central PSUs have a capacity of 1,726 MW.

‘Judiciary,police and prosecution must act in tandem’
A two-day national seminar on ‘Emerging Trends in the field of Law with Special Reference to Rights of Women and Children in India” concluded at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) on Sunday. The seminar was organised by the Department of Law,in association with University Grants Commission,New Delhi. In his valedictory address,Dr Gurjit Singh,Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law,Patiala,said there was need to accelerate the criminal justice machinery,involving judiciary,police and the prosecution,for imparting proper justice to people.

46 students awarded scholarships at GNDU
Vice-Chancellor Dr A S Brar gave away scholarships to 46 students of Guru Nanak Dev University,on behalf of the Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council of the university. The students were selected on the basis of their performance in the written test conducted by the council. Prof Brar presided over the function while Harbhajan Singh Sahni,founder president of the council,general secretary G S Kohli,president Dr J S Nanra and founder branch president Dr Harjit Singh were also present.

562 pass out after security training
A hundred and fifty eight women trainees passed out of the Jahan Khelan Police Academy on Sunday. The women re now eligible to serve as security guards. MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal inspected the passing out parade. The total strength of the batch,including men,was 562 recruits. Almost all the trained guards have got placement offers from multinational companies. MD,Punjab Police Security Corporation,M K Tiwari,was also present.

CII-PTU job fair ends
The two-day job fair organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry with the help of Punjab Technical University concluded here on Sunday. About 4,200 people got themselves registered,of which 41 got jobs and nearly 300 got offers.
