(Express)Haryana’s former chief minister and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) supremo Om Prakash Chautala’s grandson Arjun Chautala, INLD’s old trusted lieutenants Rampal Majra and Sher Singh Barshami, who was convicted in infamous JBT teachers recruitment scam along with Om Prakash Chautala and Ajay Chautala (now JJP’s national president), figure among the seven candidates announced by the party Sunday for the Haryana Vidhan Sabha polls on October 5.
INLD’s then state president Nafe Singh Rathi and a two-time MLA from Bahadurgarh was shot dead allegedly by members of Lawrence Bishnoi gang in his constituency in February this year. His wife Sheela Rathi will be contesting as INLD nominee from Bahadurgarh.
While Arjun Chautala, who is the son of INLD’s lone MLA in Haryana from Ellenabad seat Abhay Singh Chautala, will be contesting from Rania, Rampal Majra will be contesting from Kalayat, Sher Singh Barshami from Ladwa, Umed Lohan from Narnaund, Tayyab Hussain from Hathin and Master Gurtej Singh Sukhchain from Kalanwali.
Rania had traditionally been an INLD seat since 2009 when Krishan Lal won, followed by Ram Chand Kamboj in 2014. In 2019, another member of the Chautala clan and Om Prakash Chautala’s brother Ranjit Singh contested as Independent candidate and won from Rania.
Ranjit Singh is currently in BJP and unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha polls from Hisar and lost to Jai Prakash of the Congress.
In Kalayat, Rampal Majra won in 2009 but lost in 2014 and has now been fielded by INLD from the same seat. Sher Singh Barshami too had won from Ladwa in 2009. In 2014, his wife Bachan Kaur contested but lost and in 2019 his daughter in-law Sapna Barshami also contested from Ladwa, but finished a distant third.
In Narnaund, Umed Lohan will be contesting his debut Vidhan Sabha polls. In 2019, JJP’s Ram Kumar Gautam had won from Narnaund defeating BJP’s Capt Abhimanyu. Ram Kumar Gautam joined the BJP Sunday.
In Hathin, Tayyab Hussain had contested on the BSP ticket in 2019 but finished third. This time, he will be contesting as INLD nominee. In 2014 too, he contested as BSP candidate but finished fourth. From Kalanwali, Master Gurtej Singh Sukhchain will be making his debut in Vidhan Sabha polls as INLD nominee .
INLD and BSP have announced an alliance for the Haryana Vidhan Sabha polls.
