Two men were beaten up and their car damaged after they were allegedly mistaken for cow smugglers by a group of people in West Delhi’s Janakpuri area on Tuesday morning, police said.

According to the police, a PCR call was received at the Janakpuri police station on Tuesday reporting that certain people had detained and beaten suspected ‘cow smugglers’ near a school in A-1 block of Janakpuri before taking them towards the Najafgarh side. The caller, identified as Nirmal, told police that he had seen three to four persons assaulting two men and vandalising their vehicle.

Soon after the call, a police team reached Major Deepak Tyagi Marg near A-1 Janakpuri Park and found a damaged Hyundai i10 car parked on the roadside, officers said.

During enquiry, police identified the injured as Amaan and Mohammad Irfan. Police said the two men supply buffalo meat daily from the Ghazipur slaughterhouse to three shops —two in Khyala and one in Bindapur.

The injured persons also produced a receipt issued by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) slaughterhouse, dated January 6, mentioning the slaughter of one buffalo in the name of one Nabeel, who is Amaan’s brother, police said.

According to the police, the duo were returning home after making deliveries on Tuesday when they were stopped by two men identified as Vishal and Gopal, who allegedly suspected them of cow smuggling. A quarrel followed, after which more people gathered and Amaan and Irfan were allegedly assaulted, officers said. Their car was also vandalised in the incident, police added.

Both injured were taken for medical examination to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, police said.

Police added that they are also examining the role of four other persons — Tarun Solanki, Niranjan Pathak, Lokesh and Aashu — who allegedly took the injured men towards Ranhola in West Delhi after the incident.

Police said further legal action is being taken and the matter is under investigation.
