Shahdara double murder: Caretaker emerges top suspect

The couple's caretaker, who is yet to be named by the police, allegedly had the key to the main door. CCTV footage showed him walking on the road — in grey track pants with a logo on it — near the victims' house on the day of the incident, said officers privy to the details.

Days after an elderly couple was found dead at their home in East Delhi’s Shahdara, their caretaker has been identified as the key suspect in the double murder, said officers, citing the CCTV footage recovered from different locations.

A team of Delhi Police is carrying out raids in Rajasthan to nab him, The Indian Express has learnt.

He allegedly killed the couple with the help of two accomplices.

Virender Kumar Bansal (75), a retired teacher, and his wife Parvesh Bansal (65) were found dead by their son, Vaibhav (28), around midnight on Saturday at their home in Mansarovar Park’s Ram Nagar Extension, according to police. His cries had allegedly alerted the neighbours.

The couple’s caretaker, who is yet to be named by the police, allegedly had the key to the main door. CCTV footage showed him walking on the road — in grey track pants with a logo on it — near the victims’ house on the day of the incident, said officers privy to the details.

Other suspects too have been detained for questioning as the probe deepens.

Police had earlier said that robbery and personal enmity were among the possible motives being investigated, adding that the entry to the house was friendly on the day of the incident, indicating that the couple knew the accused. Some of Parvesh Bansal’s jewellery was found missing from the house following the killings.

The key suspect was caught on camera wearing a mask, gloves and a hoodie.

Vaibhav, who works as a gym trainer in Ghonda, had found his parents dead in different rooms of the house when he returned from a party around midnight on Saturday. While Parvesh was suspected to have been strangled, her husband suffered injuries to the head and face, allegedly caused by a heavy object. Police said they have not recovered any murder weapon so far from the crime scene.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam had earlier said that Virender Bansal hailed from Khekra in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh and lived with his family at Ram Nagar Extension, on the third floor of a residential building. He had retired about 15 years ago from a government school in Jyoti Nagar, where he served as a trained graduate teacher or TGT (Science).

His wife was a homemaker. The couple’s daughter Ekta Bansal, a primary school teacher, lives with her husband in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. Officers had earlier said that CCTV cameras installed at the house entrance and in the street were found to be non-functional.
