A total of 12.6 lakh electors from Ghaziabad and Noida have been removed following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, said officials, as the Election Commission of India (ECI) released Uttar Pradesh’s draft electoral roll on Tuesday. In Gautam Buddha Nagar, 4.4 lakh voters have been removed whereas Ghaziabad saw the deletion of 8.18 lakh voters, the fourth highest among all the districts of UP. Across the state, over 2.8 crore electors have been deleted from the rolls.

According to the draft, these deletions were made on the account of deaths, untraceability or permanent relocation to other areas.

In Gautam Buddha Nagar, as per the data, over 37,000 people were reported to be dead whereas 1.4 lakh people were untraceable, while 2.2 lakh people permanently relocated.

Officials said the revision exercise aimed to clean up the rolls ahead of future elections by removing ineligible or duplicate names and updating addresses while those who were genuine voters could still apply for Form 6 to register and Form 8 to make corrections and update their details. Speaking with The Indian Express, Gautam Buddha Nagar District Magistrate Medha Roopam said. “Anybody who was a valid voter will be given a chance to make the list and they can also reach their booths in the designated area. We have also asked the BLOs (booth level officers) to serve notice to those missing their name in the final list.”

Roopam also said that the deletions were a mix up from all the areas of the district. However several voters of Greater Noida, especially the ones near Sharda University and Kulesara, saw notable deletions. “One is a student-populated area whereas Kulesara was occupied by migrant workers who were employed as labourers and domestic helps,” she said.

In Ghaziabad, nearly 63,000 people were reported to be dead, 3.5 lakh people were found to have permanently shifted from the district and over 3 lakh were untraceable.

Ghaziabad District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar said that the voter list was given to the representatives of several political parties on Tuesday. “People can now file objections in the roll… and now it is also time for the voters whose names were not found in the electoral list to fill Form 6 to get registered. Apart from Form 6, we also have Form 8 in case anyone wants to rectify a mistake in the list,” said the Ghaziabad DM.
