‘Hanuman ji first to go to space’: Anurag Thakur to schoolkids
Addressing students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Pekhubela in Una on the occasion of National Space Day on Saturday, the five-time Hamirpur MP also asked students to look beyond textbooks to connect with India’s traditions.

Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Anurag Thakur on Saturday told students at an event in Una in Himachal Pradesh that Lord Hanuman could be considered the “first one to travel in space”.
Addressing students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Pekhubela in Una on the occasion of National Space Day on Saturday, the five-time Hamirpur MP also asked students to look beyond textbooks to connect with India’s traditions.
“I would like to request the principal and all of you to think beyond textbooks and take a look at our nation, our traditions, our knowledge. If you look at it from that perspective, you will find a lot to explore,” the former Information & Broadcasting Minister said.
Thakur later shared a video of the interaction on X with the caption: “Pawansut Hanuman Ji… the first astronaut.”

In the video, Thakur is heard asking students who was the first man to go to the space. Students were replied with several names, including Neil Armstrong.
While the video, which Thakur shared, was retweeted 955 times, netizens had mixed response. Some said the former union minister should urge students to focus on modern science and others hailed his views.
