Gurdas Badal stands by son

The otherwise media shy Gurdas Singh Badal, younger brother of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, finally made his presence felt by sitting next to his son.

The otherwise media shy Gurdas Singh Badal, younger brother of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, finally made his presence felt by sitting next to his son,Manpreet Singh Badal,as the latter addressed the media in Chandigarh on Wednesday after being suspended both from the party and his portfolio of finance minister.

Not ready to speak much, the only statement that Gurdas,a former MP popularly known in his area as ‘Dasji’,made at the press meet was that “I am standing by my son”. But the statement is not seen as so simple by many in Gidderbaha and Lambi, the area from where the Badal clan emerged as leaders. The fissures in the family, which were never apparent,at least between the Badal brothers, are now in the open. Gurdas was a Lok Sabha member from the erstwhile Ferozepur constituency, when Faridkot, too, was a part of it.

Everybody in Lambi,Balluana,Gidderbaha and other nearby constituencies know how Dasji has always backed his elder brother. In the absence of the senior Badal and his son,it has always been Gurdas who nurtured Lambi. Badal spent a significant part of his life in jail while Sukhbir Badal, the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, was studying abroad.

Gurpreet Singh,a resident of the area, says: “Every child knows Dasji and Manpreet in this area and Dasji, too, knows every villager by name. Parkash Singh Badal has not looked after Lambi the way Dasji has done and he has done all this for years together for his brother. The series of events unfolding in Chandigarh is unfortunate.”

Apart from Gurdas Badal, others from the family who are rallying behind Manpreet are Beas MLA Manjinder Singh Kang and Jagbir Singh Brar. Kang is related to Manpreet through his in-laws while Brar’s mother and Manpreet’s mother are sisters. Commenting on today’s event,Kang said: “It is the saddest day in the history of SAD(B).”

When asked if party took action against him too,he said: “We are not afraid and will handle the situation if such a thing happens.”
