It was a moment that made 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev cry. A day after his coach Desh Prem Azad died in a city hospital,Dev was in Chandigarh to attend his last rites and the former India captain could not control his tears.
I have not only lost my guru but also my friend. I owe him everything I have achieved in the field of cricket. Its a huge loss for cricket in the region. We have to carry forward the work he has done, Dev said. Azad, who suffered a cardiac arrest on Friday, was cremated at 12 noon at the Sector 25 Cremation ground.
His elder son Sanjeev Aggarwal lit the pyre. Dev reached Azads home in the morning and from there the body was taken to Sector 16 Stadium where finance and sports secretary VK Singh and others paid homage. Later,Azads body was taken to the cremation ground where hundreds of local cricketers paid their last respect. Chandigarh MP Pawan Kumar Bansal,PCA officials MP Pandove and GS Walia also attended the cremation. Former Indian cricketer Chetan Sharma also attended the cremation.
My association with him was from the day I was seven-years-old. He would take me on his scooter and would train me for hours at the stadium. Nowadays, coaches like him are hard to find. I will write a book on him later in my life. His death is a big loss to cricket, said Sharma.
We are saddened by the loss. His chautha and uthaula will be held at Ramgharia Bhawan,Sector 27 from 2 pm to 3 pm on August 19, said Sanjeev Aggarwal,Azads elder son.
