It’s one of the most looked forward to events not only on the institute’s roster but also on the city’s fashion circuit. It’s time for the students of the Inter National Institute of Fashion (INIFD) to showcase their creations put together after a year of hard work. Seeking inspirations from around the world,60 students have put together a bouquet of 20 collections to be presented at a fashion show titled ‘INIFD Designer Medley 2010’.

Among the collections that caught our attention was ‘Blue Muse’. Inspired by Delftware pottery of Holland which is created in blue and white, student designers Pawandeep Waraich,Ashima Arora and Pallavi Kamboj have stuck to that colour palette and used similar motifs. The collection brings in short dresses, gowns and kaftans. Seeking inspiration from another continent is the group comprising Kavita Dhaiya,Navpreet Kaur and Pankaj Prabhakar. Titled ‘Afro Euphony’,the trio have created an African showcase of dresses in striking colours using tribal motifs and bead work inspired by the Masai tribes of East Africa. The matching beadwork accessories and footwear, handcrafted by the students, adds to this collection’s overall appeal.

Students have also made an effort to revive dying arts. While student designers Anureet Bhullar,Talvinder Kaur,Gunjan Sharma and Anureet Kaur showcase Madhubani folk art through their work, their classmates — Simmi,Rajneesh Tripathi,Sapna Sharma and Monika Gautam — have sought inspiration from the Indian classical dance form Odissi. The traditional theme has been put forth in contemporary silhouettes like dresses, all done in khadi silk in

off-white colour.

Also making a statement are two other collections — Lava Cascades and I-glow. While the former is a dramatic collection in colours of the lava, think brunt orange, ash grey and rusty red,the latter is inspired by the idea of how important light is in our lives. The garments in silk, satin lycra and net fabrics in purple, white and black have LED lights embedded in various forms and patterns that make for a glowing appeal. Here’s looking forward to the finale.
