Councillors ask for more allocation

Enhancing allocation for villages and colonies,need for more multi-level parking lots and an international stadium — these were some of the demands made by councillors as the budget of the civic body came up for discussion on Monday.

The budget was approved by the councillors and it will be sent to the UT Administration with the additional suggestions of the councillors.

Councillor Pardeep Chhabra said the city requires more multilevel parking lots. “Underpasses proposed a couple of years ago,which have not seen the light of the day,should be constructed,” he said. “A centre for traders needs to be made. While two ambulances are proposed in the budget,provision need to be made for at least 10. The proposal for gas crematorium should be studied.”

Councillors Manjit Singh Chohan and Ram Lal suggested that the allocation made for villages and colonies be increased.

A similar demand was raised by councillor Anil Dubey,who said the slums did not even have adequate facilities for drainage of water.

Councillor Chander Mukhi Sharma made some suggestions that included the introduction of new technology in the civic body.

“The thickness of the roads is increasing as the carpeting is done without removing the layer below this,” he said. “New technology needs to be introduced. Measures for road safety should be introduced.”

He pointed out that the civic body has not been able to spent the budgetary allocation of last year.

Councillor Dr Amrit Bolaria said the city was starved for mind stimulating activity. “There needs to be a planetarium as well as theatre where children’s films can be screened,” he said. Councillor Jatinder Bhatia pointed out the need for increasing the income of the Chandigarh civic body.
