CN & heard

It appears that it is not only Sub Inspector Harinder Singh Sekhon whose money his ‘front man’ has to return, but also high ups.

Tip of the iceberg

It appears that it is not only Sub Inspector Harinder Singh Sekhon whose money his ‘front man’ has to return, but also high ups including UT police officers seem to have invested in the ‘front man’. The telephonic conversations between Sub Inspector Sekhon and Vikram, which he recorded himself, have references to several crores he has to return to his ‘investors’. Surnames of a few UT police officers were heard in the taped conversations.

Gabbar,the entertainer

Standing in long queues to pay homage to Mansa Devi,a man has taken the responsibility to entertain devotees in his filmy style. Dressed up as Gabbar from the movie Sholay, the man roams around in the shrine imitating the famous villain in order to entertain the police personnel and other service volunteers.

Enthusiastic

Additional Deputy Commissioner S P Arora is enthusiastic about his new charge as Chief Executive Officer of the Mansa Devi Shrine Board. Not only does he offer every visitor to his office at the shrine complex with the temple’s prasad, but he is also seen at the service of any and every VIP who comes to his office. Sometimes in his excitement he also leaves his office unattended for hours, even if the VIP is not even a public servant but an industrialist.

A strange balance

The Joint Action Committee of teachers wastes no time in appreciating or disapproving the Education Department. While, the committee showers praise when the department takes a favourable decision,it ridicules it for any unfavourable decision as well. Since the new DPI (S) has joined office, the teachers’ committee has been complaining of various pending issues including their pay scale and transfer of teachers. When the department increases the grade pay of Nursery teachers,it becomes ‘The God’,while if it delays or refuses issues, the department becomes ‘the enemy’ of the city-based union.

Blank

How serious the medical officers of the city are about spreading awareness against smoking is reflected from a board outside the emergency department in the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 16,Chandigarh. The board asks people to contact the ‘below mentioned number’ to file a complaint if they find a person smoking inside the hospital. However,no name or number is mentioned leaving a person wondering who they should contact.

Free ride!

As teams from all over the country gathered at UIET to compete in Effi-Cycle,2013,other students of the university were having their share of fun. As the teams got ready to display their vehicles, students of other departments were found asking for free rides. With the festive season round the corner, students were also caught joking about placing booking for the vehicles!

The news of PU being placed among the top 250 universities of the world has become the talk of the town. With a number of parents expressing their desire to enroll their children in the university,a few professors suggested PU might have to get more prospectus printed this year!

Dry days

With the Chandigarh Police setting up nakas at various points on city roads to catch drunk drivers, the festive season of Navratas seems to have defeated the purpose. In a recent naka set up by the Chandigarh Police, only a few drunk drivers were caught. When a senior police officer asked his juniors the reason behind the low number of challans,a woman officer replied,“Sir,it is due to the Navratas that people have quit drinking”.

Wake-up call

In a recent paper-reading competition for school children on road safety,a participant left the Chandigarh Police red-faced. Speaking on the stage, the participant said that these days even the Chandigarh Police was unable to protect itself from miscreants on city roads, leave alone residents. Hearing this, the police officers in the audience were left embarrassed.

Hope for the best

With Kashish Mittal,a 2011 batch IAS officer, replacing Mahavir Kaushik the old guard has given way to the new generation in the Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA). Hopefully, the successor will bring some significant and good changes in the functioning of RLA,which has been struggling with backlog and other peripheral issues.
