The Megh Malhar Festival celebrates the magic of the monsoons
The rain gods may be playing hide and seek with us,but heres something to cheer about the season. Creating a musical mood for the monsoons is the forthcoming Megh Malhar Festival that will celebrate the rains with classical vocal music performances by Pandit Vidyadhar Vyas and Shruti Sadolikar. The idea,explains Vijai Vardhan,principal secretary,Cultural Affairs,Haryana,is to highlight a facet of Indian culture on a regular basis. Were beginning this endeavour with Megh Malhar and every month we hope to bring to the audience of Chandigarh programmes of dance,music,poetry,literature, says Vardhan,a poet and writer himself.
Pandit Vidyadhar Vyas is an important name in the world of Hindustani classical music. With the prestigious tradition of the Gwalior gharana and an illustrious lineage,he was groomed and trained in khayal,tarana and bhajan gayaki by his renowned father Gayanacharya Pandit Narayanrao Vyas. The gifted Pandit Vyas presents a unique blend of form and content of khayal. He nurtures and develops the raga rasa and tries to harmonise it with the bhava of the compositions. Shruti Sadolikar,vocalist of the Jaipur Atrauli gharana of Hindustani music,will also be a part of the festival that will be held on August 4 at Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, Sector 27.
At present,the vice-chancellor at Bhatkhande Music Institute,University of Lucknow,Sadolikar has been groomed by her father and late Pandit Wamanrao Sadolikar. She is also known as the producer,music director and co-ordinator of the evergreen Marathi musical play Sangeet Samshykallol and has revived Sangeet Tulsidas in theatre after almost 60 years to pay homage to her father,who had played the role of Tulsidas in the 1930s original.
