Chandigarh police make changes in SOP, DSP-level officer to supervise security arrangements in court

Sources said a high-level meeting of police officers was held recently following which the changes were made in the SOP to make it stringent in the future.

Left red-face after the escape of some undertrials from the district courts, the UT Police has made changes in the standard operating procedure (SOP) for taking criminals to courts for hearings.

According to the new guidelines, the Deputy Superintendent of Police-level officer has been directed to supervise the security arrangements in the court. An inspector-level officer has been made in-charge of the ‘Bakshikhana’ (place where undertrials are kept before production in courtroom).

Sources said a high-level meeting of police officers was held recently following which the changes were made in the SOP to make it stringent in the future. As many as 25 new guidelines have been issued to the staff responsible for taking the undertrials to courts. Apart from the guidelines, directions have been issued to the DSP (Lines) to spend one hour daily in the security room in the court to supervise the security arrangements for the undertrials.
In the past three months, six undertrials have escaped from the district courts during the hearings.

Confirming the development, UT Senior Superintendent of Police Sukhchain Singh Gill said that the changes had been made in the SOP to make it more stringent so that the undertrials could not flee from the court during their productions. The SSP added that the guidelines had been issued to the staff concerned and they were told to follow these with immediate effect.

Talking about the changes, the SSP said that as many as 25 new guidelines had been issued to the staff on what kind of precautions they would have to take while taking the criminals to the court. The SSP added that the security of ‘Bakshikhana’ had been increased so that no undertrial could take advantage of the security lapse.
