Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a clerk of the fire department of the Municipal Corporation in a raid conducted at the MC office in Sector 17 on Monday. The clerk Sudhir Kumar was caught red handed while accepting Rs 3,000 bribe.
Kumar had allegedly demanded bribe from a fireman for clearing the medical bills of his mother who had recently undergone cataract operation. The bills amounted to Rs 17,000.
The fireman approached the CBI on October 17 with a complaint,which was then verified by the officials.
Following this,a raid was conducted at the MC office. Kumar was caught red handed while accepting the bribe. CBI has seized the files pertaining to the case.
Superintendent of Police (CBI) Vineet Brijlal said that they had received the complaint from a fireman of the Municipal Corporation.
Meanwhile,Additional Commissioner, Municipal Corporation,Sunil Bhatia said that once we receive a report from the CBI,departmental action would also be initiated against Sudhir.
Juvenile gets 3-yr jail for sodomy<\b>
MOHALI: A 20-year-old man was on Monday found guilty of sodomising a six-year-old and was sent to a special home for juveniles for three years. It is the maximum punishment that can be awarded under the Juvenile Justice Act. The convict,who was 16-years-old during the time of the incident,was held guilty of unnatural offences under Section 377 of the IPC and was sentenced under Section 15(I)(g) of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act,2000 by a Juvenile Court in Mohali. The convict was granted bail after furnishing a bond of Rs 25,000. Pronouncing the judgment,the Juvenile court rejected the plea of probation by the accused considering the gravity of the crime and rejected the defences argument that there were discrepancies in the statements of the prosecution witnesses. The convict,a resident of Chandheri village,was arrested in May 2009.
Three acquitted in dowry death case<\b>
MOHALI: A Mohali court on Monday acquitted three persons in a dowry death case after three prime witnesses turned hostile in the case. Dharmendra Singh,34,and his parents Gurdial Singh and Jaspal Kaur,all residents of Peer Mushalla village near Zirakpur,were acquitted by the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Dilbagh Singh Johal. The three was booked in 2010 when Dharmendras wife was found murdered under mysterious circumstances. The parents of the girl had alleged foul play saying their daughter had been killed after being harassed for dowry. The husband and in-laws of the deceased were subsequently booked for murder and dowry-death under sections 302 and 304B of the IPC. However,the parents,who were the prime witnesses,retracted their statements leading to the acquittal.
Two brothers arrested for theft<\b>
MOHALI: Mohali Police on Monday arrested two brothers for allegedly stealing a purse at a wedding in Phase 1. The 10-year-old and 16-year-old accused were on Monday produced before a court and was sent to judicial custody after being booked for theft charges.Police said,the two boys,originally belong to Madhya Pradesh,sneaked into a wedding being in Phase 1 on Sunday. They spotted a purse lying unattended and grabbed it but were nabbed by the guests while trying to run away. They were then handed over to the police and was booked under Section 379 of the IPC.Police said that there is an entire gang of several child thieves who target wedding guests. Relatives of the accused are also suspected to be involved. The matter is under investigation.
Man gets life in triple murder case<\b>
AMBALA: Judge Bimlesh Tanwar awarded life imprisonment to Balwinder,a resident of Patiala in a triple murder case here on Monday. The incident took place in August 26,2011. and police had registered a case of murder based on the complaint of one Rajinder Kumar. Investigations revealed that Balwinder murdered Sunita and her two children Sanju and Sunny. Postmortem report revealed that Sunita was pregnant. Her husband had died earlier. Balwinder had developed illicit relations with the woman.
Two get 6-yr RI under NDPS Act<\b>
Mohali: A Mohali court on Monday sentenced two persons to six years RI for possessing narcotic substances under the NDPS Act. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Parminder Pal Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 60,000 on each of the convicts,failing which they will have to undergo an additional simple imprisonment for one year.
