State to introduce olive cultivation

Chandigarh:To boost crop diversification,Punjab on Tuesday chalked out a comprehensive plan for introducing olive cultivation. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal asked the agriculture department to explore the feasibility of olive plantation on the basis of a pilot project over an area of 10 hectares in collaboration with Punjab Agriculture University in Ludhiana. He also asked the financial commissioner (Development) to draft a policy to provide subsidy to farmers interested in olive cultivation.

Probe into wheat stock embezzlement

Chandigarh:Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday ordered a vigilance probe into the alleged embezzlement of wheat — worth Rs 4.50 crore — at Mullanpur Storage Centre in Ludhiana district. Later,an FIR was also lodged against former plinth in-charge Mela Singh in this connection.

Punjab inks MoU with TERI

Chandigarh:The Punjab government on Tuesday signed a MoU with the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) to jointly address issues pertaining to climate change,sustainable development as well as conservation and optimal use of water. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal hoped this initiative will go a long way in evolving a concrete policy to promote research and development especially in such areas.

Assam students meet governor

Chandigarh:The National Integration Tour,an Army initiative,comprising 12 students of Nalbari district of Assam on Tuesday called on Punjab Governor Shivraj V Patil. Sharing their views,the students said they were having a memorable time visiting places of historical and academic interests. Students team,led by one officer,one JCO and two NCOs of Army will visit Amritsar and Shimla also,an official spokesman said. Major Kiran said this tour was organised by 12 Mahar Regiment under operation Sadbhavana for the year 2012-2013.
