Amarinder issues 2-day ultimatum

The Punjab Congress on Saturday appealed all its rebel leaders contesting against the party candidates in the municipal elections to withdraw their candidature or face action.

The Punjab Congress on Saturday appealed all its rebel leaders contesting against the party candidates in the municipal elections to withdraw their candidature or face action.

State party chief Capt Amarinder Singh,in a statement,asked all the rebels “to withdraw by June 4,failing which you will be expelled from the party for a period of six years.”

Maintaining that the rebels will not gain anything by standing against own party candidates,he said it will only provide undue advantage to the SAD-BJP alliance.

He said,this was the time for the party rank and file to unite and romp home in all the four municipal corporations.

Stating that party understands the aspirations of the workers,he said,“It is not possible to give seat to every applicant. The candidates were selected after thorough discussions and deliberations.”

A section of Congress rebels gave formed a forum and are contesting the elections with torch as their symbol.

Meanwhile,former Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira too urged the party cadres to remain united.

He said Punjab needs a formidable Opposition party like Congress to keep an eye on the interests of the masses. He said ruling alliance will soon crumble like a pack of cards owing to its dismal financial situation.
