The gloves were off once again during the House meeting of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on Tuesday, with Chandigarh MP, Kirron Kher’s alleged “unparliamentary remarks” drawing sharp criticism and a swift pushback from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors in the House.

Chandigarh Mayor Anup Gupta later suspended all the AAP councillors who were subsequently marshalled out of the meeting hall.

AAP councillor Jasbir Singh had alleged in the House that Kher used unparliamentary language and also hurled abuses against him, a charge she denied. Later in the day, Jasbir also filed a police complaint stating that Kher used words that also hurt his sentiments, which Kher denied stating that the AAP leader was lying and she couldn’t use the words as she was from Jasbir’s community.

It all started when before taking up the agenda of solid waste management, AAP councillors raised the issue and sought “accountability of people’s tax money”. This irked Kher, who said, “Yeh kya dungerpana hai? (What is this wild behaviour?)”. Agitated AAP councillors then began seeking an apology from Kher for using the word “dungerpana”.

When Jasbir said that there should be accountability for people’s tax money, Kher went up to him. She later alleged that when Jasbir raised “unnecessary allegations”, she asked, “What about Kejriwal who made a sheesh mahal (glass palace) with taxpayers’ money?” This, Kher alleged, prompted Jasbir to hurl abuses at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which she “could not tolerate”.

According to Leader of Opposition Damanpreet Singh, Kher then used a slur to refer to him.
Jasbir also stood up in the House and alleged that the MP “abused him and used unparliamentary words, threatening him to sit down”.

After Jasbir used the words which he alleged the MP had hurled at him, there was a ruckus in the House. Mayor Gupta, a BJP councillor, suspended Jasbir “for using such words attributing them to the MP” and marshals removed Jasbir, who said he was not at fault.

The mayor then suspended all AAP councillors as they were not “apologising for the conduct of their councillor against the MP” and as none of them even apologised on his behalf.

While speaking to The Indian Express, MP Kher stated, “ That councillor used such bad words in the house that I have hurled such abuses. I have never used any such words. It is such an insult to the house. How can you use such words in the house. He was talking crap about taxpayers money..I just went to answer him since people were shouting just saying that you are talking about taxpayers funds, what can you say about sheeshmahal that Kejriwal has built…isnt it not misuse of taxpayers money….he then abused our Prime Minister…..and I was shaken up completely. I just said have you gone mad and dare you abuse the PM. It is the Kejriwal who is a thief.” She added, “ Moreover, I just told him that faidan mein main tujhe fayda nahi hone dungi. I don’t even know his name. I just went to my seat and then sat. I was shaken entirely with the words he used against our Prime Minister.” On Jasbir lodging a police complaint, Kher said, “ He is totally lying and will say that he is shameless. I have never used any such word. Moreover, I am from the same religion, what he is alleging.”

While speaking to The Indian Express, Jasbir Singh said, “I informed the House the kind of language she used to make me sit down and not question anything. And they spinned the situation in such a way that they made us look like culprits. She abused me and AAP supremo as well.” AAP leader of Opposition, Damanpreet Singh said it was “the death of democracy”.

Interestingly, Kher had landed in a similar soup once last year as well, having addressed the Aam Aadmi Party councillors as ‘dunger’ (animals) and stated that she hasn’t ever witnessed such ‘junglipana’ in the general house.
Kher’s remarks then had come while speaking at a press conference to mark eight years of Modi government when she was asked about the AAP councillors complaining that their works are not being done.
