ACB files bribe case against cop

The case was filed at the direction of a local court.

The Vadodara Anti-Corruption Bureau has filed a case against police inspector A L Chaudhary for demanding a bribe of Rs 50,000 from two persons who had approached him to lodge a complaint. The case was filed at the direction of a local court.

The case pertains to 2011 when brothers Laksman and Rameshbhai Meghwani had approached the Panigate police station to file a case of fraud and forgery against another party.

However, they alleged,Chaudhary,as the in charge of the police station, refused to do so unless they paid him Rs 50,000 as bribe. Currently,Chaudhary is in-charge of Raopura police station.

The two approached the ACB two years ago against Chaudhary, but the department did not take any action against him. On Monday,as per the direction of a local court, the ACB began investigation against Chaudhary.

“We have been instructed by the court to investigate the allegation of corruption against the police officer and we shall summon records of this case and the grounds on which the FIR was refused. If he is found guilty of surpassing the criminal procedure,we will have reason to believe the claim of the complainants,” an ACB officer said.

Chaudhary, when contacted, said: “The case was brought to me as part of a civil one and I was not able to convert it into a criminal offence like they expected me to do it. Because I refused to do so,they have filed a case against me.”
