ITR Filing FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26) Guide: The Income Tax (IT) Department has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 by over a month. Usually, the due date for filing ITR is July 31. However, this year, the last date has been extended to September 15, 2025.
In a statement issued on May 27, 2025, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said, “This extension will provide more time due to significant revisions in ITR forms, system development needs, and TDS credit reflections. This ensures a smoother and more accurate filing experience for everyone. Formal notification will follow.”
Thus, the taxpayers who have not yet filed their returns are advised to make use of this extended window and complete the process at the earliest. Here’s how you can file your ITR on time and avoid last-minute hassles.
Income Tax Filling Step by Step Process FY2025
- One must login to the e-filing portal using your USER ID and the Password. The status of PAN should be active and it should be linked with Aadhaar.
- On the home page, navigate to e-file – Income Tax Returns – File Income Tax Return.
- Select the assessment year as 2024-25 and choose the mode of filing as online.
- Now, if you have pending return, click ‘Resume Filing’ or else ‘New Filing.’ Also choose the filing status (Individual/HUF/Others).
- Select Status as applicable to you and click Continue to proceed further. Also select the ITR form and click Proceed.
- Once you have selected the ITR applicable to you, note the list of documents needed and click Let’s Get Started.
- Select the checkbox applicable to you regarding reason for filing ITR and click Continue.
- For AY 2025-26 New Tax Regime is the default Tax Regime. Option “No” will be Auto Selected for the question “If you want to opt out of New Tax Regime”. Select “Yes” in the Personal Information Section, if you wish to file your return under Old Tax Regime.
- Enter/ Edit your income and total deductions details in the different sections. After completing and confirming all the sections of the form, click Proceed.
- If you click on “Pay Now” you will be redirected to e-pay Tax service. Click Continue. After successful payment through e-Filing portal a success message is displayed. Click Back to Return Filing to complete filing of ITR.
- However, in cases, if there is no tax liability (No Demand / No Refund) or if you are eligible for a Refund
Click Preview Return. If there is no tax liability payable, or if there is a refund based on tax computation, you will be taken to the Preview and Submit Your Return page. - On the Preview and Submit Your Return page, select the declaration checkbox and click Proceed to Validation. Once internal validations is successful then click on Preview.
- Click on Preview of Return and proceed to validation. Once return is successfully validated with Upload level validation then click on Proceed to Verification. On the Complete your Verification page, select your preferred option and click Continue. On the e-Verify page, select the option through which you want to e-Verify the return and click Continue.
