Covered in hyacinth and 18 MLD of sewage water getting discharged from 18 outfalls everyday, leading to its slow death, BMC has once again floated a revival plan for the lake, this time at an estimated cost of Rs 108 crore. NAYONIKA BOSE looks at the deteriorating condition of the lake and the plan to revive it.

BMC's data shows that on June 18 last year, Mumbai's water stock stood at 5.35 per cent, and on the same date in 2023, the stock stood at 8.23 per cent.

With rising urbanisation in areas around Powai lake, civic officials said that a large quantity of sewage is discharged into the lake which has also led to increase in vegetation like water hyacinth and other unwanted plants in the lake.

While the cleaning work is undertaken by the BMC every year, the Bombay Natural History Society had advised them to stop as the former said it will hamper the breeding process of aquatic birds and animals. Taking note of the same, BMC stopped the work till June 10.

The BMC received several complaints of water from sewers being released into the lake due to which it always appears to be full, but the discharge of unclean water led to an increase in hyacinths and algae content in the water body.

The plea sought directions to restore the site to its original form with immediate effect, till the information on the project is made available in the public domain in its entirety, followed by an all-inclusive public hearing.
