MRVC ropes in IIT-B for study to improve suburban rail network

The study will benchmark capital and operating expenditure (CapEx and OpEx) of the suburban railway vis-à-vis Metro systems, and evaluate parameters such as cost per passenger-kilometre, payback periods, energy utilisation, maintenance cycles and rolling stock standardisation.

In March, Vaishnaw announced that the procurement of 238 air-conditioned (AC) local trains has been approved for Mumbai suburban network.

MD of MRVC, R S Khurana, said: “MRVC is going take help from RITES Limited to study traffic on both the corridors... Also, in future, Wadala-Ghatkopar-Kasarvadavali Metro line will run parallel to the CSMT-Panvel corridor and it needs to be studied whether both projects would get enough commuters.”
