The day ended on an even keel, but Dinesh Karthik was the biggest gainer. The 29-year-old Tamil Nadu ‘keeper-batsman missed a ton by eight runs but still it was an excellent effort in seamer-friendly conditions which helped his team claw back into the game after they were reduced to 91/4 against Bengal.
Karthik’s innings was laced with 13 fours. A few cover drives and a couple of flicks stood out. Coming at No. 4 with the ball still doing a bit, he took his time before opening up. He was confident in his approach and sure about his footwork.
On 92, however, he reached out to a Ashok Dinda away-goer that pitched wide outside the off stump. It was a loose shot and a thin edge went to Sreevats Goswami behind the stumps.
For the hosts, Dinda bowled his heart out but lacked support from his partners. Also, Bengal’s fielding was comical at times. A couple of easy run out chances went a-begging. Earlier, the start was delayed by an hour and a half.
Brief scores: Tamil Nadu 208/5 in 66 overs (D Karthik 92; A Dinda 3/68).
