JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar detained by Delhi Police

Jawaharlal Nehru Univeristy Student Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was detained on Friday by Delhi Police at Bihar Bhawan for protesting against the alleged attack on Patna Arts college students, who were on sitting on a hunger strike.

Kanhaiya, along with JNU students, demanded the suspension of college principal Chandrabhushan Srivastav and the ongoing examinations be cancelled and conducted afresh.

They were protesting against the “violent crackdown” on the Arts college students by Patna Police and “JDU goons”. The protesters also demanded extension of the date of Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) main exams so that the
dates do not clash with that of UPSC prelims.

Kanhaiya said: “The condition of education in Bihar is continuously deteriorating. The government is not taking the demands of students regarding quality education seriously. And those who are fighting for this significant and relevant cause are facing violence and imprisonment.”

The demonstration started around 3.30 PM, following which Kumar and 42 others were put inside a bus and detained at Parliament Street Police Station.

“The protesters were detained considering law and order issues,” DCP (New Delhi) Jatin Narwal said.

Earlier this week, violent clashes broke out between the All India Students Federation (AISF) and the JD(U) student wing over an exam schedule. The AISF wanted the exams to be postponed and the JD(U) student wing were against it.
