Calling the lynching of a man at Dadri “a very serious violation of human rights”, the National Human Rights Commission Monday said it “did not rule out” the possibility of taking action over it.
However, it said the law restricts it from acting since the matter has been taken up by the National Commission for Minorities.
“Dadri incident is a very serious violation of human rights and some complaints have come to us. But, under the statute, we have no jurisdiction to take cognizance of violation of human rights if another commission has already taken note of it. But we are exploring the possibility of doing something on it,” Justice Cyriac Joseph, acting chairperson of the NHRC, told mediapersons.

On the issue of beef ban leading to serious law and order situation, Justice Joseph said even though the commission has not formed its stand on the “complex issue”, it is bound to protect the “citizens’ right to food of their choice”.
Reacting to cancellation of Pakistani Ghazal singer Ghulam Ali’s concerts and the ink attack on Observer Research Foundation chairman Sudheendra Kulkarni on Monday, Justice Joseph said the commission will examine them.
