A textile trader, who has been assisting the witnesses in rape cases against self-styled godman Asaram and his son Narayan Sai, suffered an acid attack here on Sunday. The victim, Dinesh C Waghchandani, however, managed to get hold of the attacker, while his accomplice escaped on a bike. This was the third attack targeting witnesses in the rape cases against the two. Recently, Rakesh Patel, a key witness, was stabbed by two men. Police said the attackers were riding a motorcycle and approached Waghchandani from behind. The pillion rider threw acid on the trader and tried to escape. Waghchandani somehow grabbed his attacker and passersby overpowered him. Cops at Umra police station have refused to reveal the identity of the two attackers. The trader suffered burns on his face and other parts. Police commissioner Rakesh Asthana said that Waghchandani is not a witness in the case, but has been helping the witnesses against Asaram and his son. “There is an old enmity between Waghchandani and Asaram. We are investigating every angle,” he said. Waghchandani was a former follower of Asaram, but parted ways in 2007 for reasons not yet known.
