Maharashtra: 4,500 doctors go on strike today, want more CCTV cameras, better security
MARD is demanding the arrest of all the four accused who assaulted KEM doctors, and a ‘rapid action force’ of four bouncers.

OVER 4,500 resident doctors across Maharashtra will go on an indefinite strike Sunday in protest against the assault on three resident doctors at KEM hospital on Friday. Their list of demands includes urgently installing more CCTV cameras and stepping up security in the hospital premises.
Medical Education Minister Vinod Tawde Saturday visited KEM hospital and assured to install cameras in 32 additional locations inside the hospital by October 30. A security audit report of the hospital states there are currently 10 cameras opposed to 145 required to cover the entire premise. Additionally, the hospital has 34 walkie-talkies, which needs to be escalated to 55.

Bhoiwada Police registered a first information report against four people for attacking doctors inside the hospital. On Friday morning, a three-year-old boy from Govandi, Abu Sufian, succumbed to dengue at KEM hospital’s general ward leading to a rampage by the family members.
Sufian was brought to the hospital at around 9.30 pm on Thursday with non-recordable pulse and blood pressure. In absence of paediatric intensive care unit beds, he was admitted first in the emergency ward and later in the general ward.
“He had been vomiting for three days and was in a very bad condition. The doctors explained the entire situation to the parents,” said Dr Anurag Dhodiyal, a resident doctor at KEM Hospital.
At 5 am on Friday, following the boy’s death, the father along with three relatives started beating Dr Kushal Sharnagat, Dr Puneet Garg, and Dr Suhas Chowdhary, posted in the paediatric ward, with wooden sticks and hospital chairs. The three doctors are recuperating at the hospital.”
“The patient (Sufian) collapsed at around 4 am. We immediately gave CPR, but were unable to revive the child. We continued ventilating the patient and informed the relatives about the child’s condition,” said Garg, who sustained injuries on his head.
According to KEM hospital, Sufian was admitted with pneumonia in 2014, and was put on ventilator support and also underwent surgery for gastric perforation. “He was treated and discharged after complete treatment,” said Dr Sagar Mundada, president, Medical Association of Resident Doctors (MARD).
MARD is demanding the arrest of all the four accused who assaulted KEM doctors, and a ‘rapid action force’ of four bouncers. “We demanded improved security across 14 medical colleges and total 145 CCTV cameras in KEM hospital by October 3,” said Mundada.
