A day after the Chandigarh Administration shunted out CTU employees who were protesting, the union has issued a threat call to protest indefinitely if they aren’t reinstated.

Union employees said that it all started in November when the CTU administration declared approximately 85 buses from Depot No. 4, which had completed 15 years of service, as condemned, and relieved 142 outsourced drivers from their duties.

“CTU officials assured the CTU Contract Workers union that these drivers would be reinstated upon the arrival of new electric buses. However, the conductors working on the old buses were transferred to other depots,” they said.

It was added, “In December, the CTU Administration refused to assign duty to these relieved drivers on a rotational basis, leaving the CTU Contract Workers union executive with no option but to fight for their employees’ jobs.”

The CTU Contract Workers union decided to hold a protest. However, the UT invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) and terminated services of the drivers and conductors who participated in the protest.

“Due to ESMA, there is confusion among the CTU employee unions regarding how to help these outsourced employees,” the employees said.

At a meeting held Tuesday, the Sanyukt Karamchari Morcha appealed to the regular organisations of CTU (Chandigarh Transport Undertaking) to support the CTU Contract Workers union and announced its support for saving the jobs of the outsourced employees.

The meeting of the Joint Employees Front was attended by Gopal Dutt Joshi, Ashwini Kumar, Sukhbir Singh, Rajinder Katoch, Harkesh Chand, Subramanyam Shiv Murti Yadav, Bipin Sher Singh, Ashok Kumar, and Gurpreet Singh Bawa, among others, from the main executive committees of the Federation of UT and MC Employees, Joint Action Committee of UT and MC Employees, Joint Employees Welfare Association Chandigarh, Joint Action Committee of Teachers, and All Contractual Karamchari Sangh Bharat.

Joshi, the convener, condemned the administration’s decision and appealed to the Chandigarh Administration to immediately reinstate the dismissed CTU outsourced drivers and urged the regular organisations in CTU to support these outsourced employees.

Sukhbir Singh, another convener, said that the Sanyukt Karamchari Morcha will soon hold a convention at Bhakna Bhavan on December 16 to address these issues. At this convention, a consensus will be reached on the demands of the regular, contract, and outsourced employees, including the dismissed and terminated CTU outsourced drivers and conductors.

Other unions and federations of the Joint Employees Front expressed their agreement with the demand for the reinstatement of the dismissed and terminated CTU outsourced drivers and conductors, and the appeal to the regular CTU organisations to support the CTU contract workers.
