The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Tuesday announced that all hotels, restaurants, pubs and bars will be inspected by the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) authorities as part of a special fire safety drive that will be held between December 22 and 28. The BMC’s announcement came two days after a devastating fire that was reported at a Goa nightclub, which claimed 25 lives.
In a statement on Tuesday, the BMC authorities said that action will be taken against establishment owners violating safety norms under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Safety Act. The BMC’s statement also stated that last year a similar drive was undertaken by the authorities as per which as many as 731 establishments were inspected and 12 of them were penalised.
According to the state Fire Safety Act–establishment owners are supposed to have operational fire prevention systems like sprinklers in place. Further, the properties are also supposed to have adequate space for refuge areas and spacious fire safety exits to ensure safety for the patrons.
The civic authorities also maintained that alongside hotels, pubs and nightclubs, the civic authorities will also inspect gymkhanas, malls and all places that would record heavy footfall during the week of Christmas celebrations.
Alongside this, the MFB also maintained that adequate manpower of lifeguards and lifeboats should also be deployed at the beaches of Mumbai as a precautionary measure.
Mumbai has a total shoreline length of 145 km and there are 12 beaches that are open to the public. These beaches are spread between the island city, eastern and western suburbs.
Usually, a large number of citizens and tourists visit the city’s beaches during the festive season, the authorities said.
“For every one hundred metres, we will have one lifeguard stationed to ensure that any kind of incidents be averted immediately,” the official said.
