Two suspected Pakistani militants were gunned down in Noida by the UP Anti-Terrorist Squad and police on the eve of Republic Day. An ATS officer was injured in the incident.
The men,who were shot after their Maruti 800 car was chased,have been identified by police as Ali Ahmad and Abu Ismail from Okara and Rawalakot in Pakistan. Officials suspect they may have been Lashkar-e-Toiba operatives.
Police said Ali Ahmad,before he died while being taken to hospital,said his real name was Farooq and that he was from Okara.
Police have recovered Pakistani passports,maps of various locations in Delhi,one kilogram of RDX,five hand grenades,two AK-47 rifles,bullets,detonators,two forged identity cards of a Delhi school and Rs 18,000 from the car. Police said they recovered two diaries that could lead to more arrests in coming days.
Gurbachan Lal,IGP (Meerut range),said,There was information on the movement of terrorists. We are looking for people who gave them local support. SSP Naveen Arora said: The ATS had specific information about two men who were carrying guns and ammunition and were planning to enter Delhi. Their plan was to target the Republic Day parade. Police said the car had a fake UP registration number it turned out to be that of a scooter.
