Two days after a supervisor working on Metro Line 9 died after falling from a metro construction site on Mira Road near Mumbai, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has imposed penalties of Rs 50 lakh on the contractor, N A Constructions, and Rs 5 lakh on the general consultant, Systra, citing alleged lapses in safety measures.
MMRDA has ordered a detailed probe into all safety lapses in the project. The report will examine whether contractors followed all mandated protocols, including the use of safety harnesses, guardrails and timely supervision, and whether the consultant effectively monitored these measures. Depending on the findings, further administrative or legal action could be taken against the parties involved.
The incident occurred at Saibaba Nagar, where steel materials were being arranged for the construction of a metro station. Farhan Ahmed, 42, was supervising the work and instructing labourers when he stepped aside to avoid a swinging steel section.
He reportedly lost his balance and fell from a height of approximately 60–70 feet. Ahmed was rushed to Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Government Hospital in Bhayandar, where he was declared dead. Police have registered an accidental death report.
Officials said preliminary findings suggested safety protocols were not strictly enforced at the site. While contractors are responsible for implementing on-site safety measures, the general consultant is tasked with oversight and ensuring compliance with established norms. The penalties were imposed after MMRDA reviewed the circumstances of the fall and found lapses on both counts.
An MMRDA official said, “The inquiry is being conducted by the general consultant of Metro Line 4 to ascertain the exact cause and lapses but to provide relief to the family of the deceased, we have given a compensation of Rs 5 lakh. Insurance compensation will also be provided. Further action will follow after the inquiry report is submitted.”
