With sharp differences in the party on the future course of action and the choice of the official candidate to head the proposed National Unity government, the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists (UCPN-M) Politburo is unlikely to name party chief Prachanda as the sole candidate for the PMs post.
The Politburo meet,on for the past five days,is likely to keep the government leadership issue vague even though it would stake claim to head the government in its capacity as the largest party in the constituent assembly.
A senior Politburo member told The Indian Express on the penultimate day of the meet that the understanding not to mention Prachandas name as the partys official candidate for the PMs post is a clear disapproval of Prachandas leadership. Prachanda came under severe attack from several members including Devendra Poudel,Eam Karki and Nanda Kishore Pun Pasang,Deputy Commander of the Peoples Liberation Army.
Party vice-president Baburam Bhattarai said: We should keep the option open about who the party should be fielding. If Prachanda is not acceptable to other political parties,we must find someone else. He also made it clear that he was also eyeing the post.
Joined by at least half-a-dozen others in the 46-member Politburo,he insisted that no one should be mentioned as the partys candidate. This line is going to be endorsed by the Politburo when it adopts resolution tomorrow, another member said.
