A eunuchs spectacular victory in the mayoral election in Sagar has stunned major political parties in Madhya Pradesh. Kamla Bua contested the election as an Independent and won by the highest margin in the mayoral contests in 12 municipal corporations across the state.

Eunuchs have contested and won elections in the past but the 55-year-olds victory has confounded the political parties because the victors campaign was so low-key that it almost went unnoticed. Kamla did not even have polling agents when the votes were cast on December 11. There were few hoardings and fewer posters.

In comparison, the BJP and Congress had spent a lot of money in this divisional headquarters,a gateway to the Bundelkhand region of MP.

A team of seven eunuchs campaigned for her but only after their daily routine of clapping and singing through the streets.

It was as if the voters were hypnotized, said BJP MLA from Sagar Shailendra Jain. I did not find a single polling agent on the day of voting but ran into her at a booth.

We had heard stories of the support she was getting but we dismissed them, admitted Ashok Naharwar, the husband of BJP candidate Suman. People were angry with the BJP and the anti-incumbency cost us heavily.

Kamla got 64,683 votes while the BJP got 21,250 votes. The Congress lost its deposit.

I want to do much for the people of Sagar so that they pray for me to ensure that this is my last birth as a eunuch, Kamla said, adding she did not covet the mayors post. When people live in bungalows of Rs 50 lakh should not the poor have at least a room to live. She has announced that she would donate her salary among the poor.
