‘One engine defunct, another will stop working in 2024’, Kharge attacks BJP’s ‘double engine’ pitch

The coming polls, he said, was an election for the future of Karnataka. Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kharge asked the BJP to list out the contributions of the saffron party to Karnataka in general and the Kalyana Karnataka region in particular.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge Monday took a swipe at the ‘double engine’ government remarks made by BJP leaders, saying that while one engine had stopped working another would do so in 2024.

He was speaking at a rally held in Kalaburagi on the last day of campaigning for Karnataka polls scheduled May 10. “Nothing good was done in Karnataka under the BJP… One engine of the double-engine government is not working in Karnataka. In 2024, another engine will also stop working,” he said.

The coming polls, he said, was an election for the future of Karnataka. Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kharge asked the BJP to list out the contributions of the saffron party to Karnataka in general and the Kalyana Karnataka region in particular.

“Modi says that the double-engine government has worked a lot. I am asking what the double-engine government has contributed to Karnataka and Kalyana Karnataka. I might have lost as an MP, but we will place the details of projects we did before the people. You (BJP) should say what you did,” he said.

Accusing the BJP of withholding funds for various development projects in the Kalyana Karnataka region, he alleged that the BJP was only good at ‘communal polarisation’. “The only thing the BJP does is pit Hindus against Muslims? For how many days will you use the same tactic? People should understand this,” he said.

He targeted Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for attacking the five guarantees made by the Congress. “The two leaders term Congress assurances as bogus guarantees. Elect us and we will show how we fulfill the assurances,” he added.
