‘Drunk’ advocate ploughs SUV into revellers on New Year’s Eve near Bengaluru mall; 4 injured

The Bengaluru police have booked the allegedly intoxicated driver and also the Phoenix Mall of Asia management.

An allegedly intoxicated driver crashed his SUV into revellers on New Year’s Eve near the Phoenix Mall of Asia in Bengaluru, critically injuring four people.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 10.15 pm on Wednesday. A police officer said the area was packed with pedestrians when a Mahindra XUV-700 emerged from the Phoenix Mall of Asia at high speed. The driver first crashed into iron barricades installed by mall management on the footpath before ploughing into pedestrians.

The accused driver has been identified as Sunil Kumar Singh B, 48, an advocate.

The Chikka Baanavara traffic police have booked Singh under Sections 281 (rash or negligent driving or riding on public ways that endangers human life) and 125 (a) (acts done rashly or negligently that endanger human life or personal safety) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 185 (driving while drunk or under the influence of drugs) of the Indian Motor Vehicle Act.

The police have also registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the Phoenix Mall of Asia management for allegedly failing to implement adequate safety measures for visitors.

The injured have been identified as Akkamma, 30, Chandrashekhar, 36, Rajalakshmi, 53, and Prajwal Shashidhar Chavadi, 27. The victims have been admitted to Manipal Hospital.
