Brexit vote: Remain 55 per cent, Leave 45 per cent, says Populus online poll

The survey of 4,700 was carried out on Tuesday and up to midnight on Wednesday night.

Support for remaining in the European Union stood at 55 percent, with 45 percent supporting a Brexit, according to an online Populus poll released on Twitter on Thursday while voting was under way in Britain’s referendum.

Populus said the survey of 4,700 was carried out on Tuesday and up to midnight on Wednesday night.

More than 46 million people are registered to vote in Thursday’s plebiscite, which asks: “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?”

The referendum has exposed deep divisions over issues including sovereignty and national identity.

Financial markets have been volatile ahead of the vote.
