The mass shooting near the community of Lexington was preceded by a fight among some of the men at the celebration (File photo)Three people were killed, and eight others were injured early Saturday in central Mississippi when at least two individuals opened fire into a crowd celebrating a school’s homecoming football win, authorities have confirmed, new agency Associated Press reported.
The incident occurred several hours after the game had ended, with around 200 to 300 people gathered on an outdoor trail. Holmes County Sheriff Willie March reported that the shooting followed a fight between some men at the celebration, but the cause of the altercation remains unknown.
“It was chaos, to tell you the truth,” March said as quoted by AP. “The shooting just started, and people began running.” The gathering was taking place approximately 3 kilometres outside of Lexington, Mississippi, which is located more than 96 kilometres north of Jackson.
The victims included two 19-year-olds and a 25-year-old. The injured were airlifted to local hospitals for treatment.
Deputies are currently investigating the scene, collecting ammunition to determine the number of weapons involved. Sheriff March highlighted that recent shootings by young men have been an ongoing issue in the county, with disagreements often leading to violence.
“It’s hard to see what they are fighting over. I don’t think it’s about turf or drugs,” March was quoted as saying by AP. “These young men are just walking around with weapons. I wish I had an answer.”
