US President Donald Trump on Sunday reiterated that America is committed to buying and owning Gaza and would allow a portion of Gaza land to be rebuilt by other Middle East countries.
Trump made the remarks while aboard Air Force One to attend the Super Bowl in New Orleans. Trump said that he is ready to give a section of Gaza land to other states in the Middle East to build it through American auspices.
“But we’re committed to owning it, taking it, and making sure that Hamas doesn’t move back. There’s nothing to move back into. The place is a demolition site. The remainder will be demolished. Everything’s demolished,” Trump said, according to Reuters.
Announcing a reprieve for the Palestinian refugees, Trump also suggested that he was open to the possibility of allowing some refugees into the United States but it would be considered on a case to case basis by his administration.
In a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week, Trump floated the idea of a US takeover of the Gaza Strip and engaging in a massive rebuilding effort. However, it remains to be known under which authority the US would take over Gaza.
Trump, in the meeting with Netanyahu at the White House last week said, “We’ll own Gaza and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site.”
Trump suggested creating economic development in Gaza to supply unlimited jobs and housing for the people and added that he envisions a “long-term” ownership of the Gaza Strip after the Palestinians are moved out to somewhere else.
