OP Jindal Global University (JGU) has announced five new Short-Term Study Abroad Programmes (ST-SAPs) in Japan for Summer 2026, expanding its internationalisation efforts and strengthening India-Japan academic collaboration. According to an official statement, the new programmes form one of the largest Japan-focused mobility initiatives led by an Indian university.
The announcement marks a significant expansion of JGU’s existing engagements in Japan, covering academic partnerships, cultural exchanges, and student mobility.
Five short-term programmes across Japanese universities
The new study programmes will be offered between 15 June and 3/4 July 2026 across five Japanese institutions. Each programme focuses on a distinct academic theme:
| University | Location | Programme Theme | Dates |
| University of Tokyo | Tokyo | Japan in a Globalized World | 15 June – 3 July 2026 |
| Chuo University | Tokyo | Global Japan: Understanding Law, Economics, and Society | 15 June – 3 July 2026 |
| University of Yamanashi | Yamanashi | AI and Humanities: Applications in SDGs | 15 June – 4 July 2026 |
| Kyorin University | Tokyo | Tradition Meets Tomorrow: Exploring Japan’s Heritage, Economy, and Society | 15 June – 3 July 2026 |
| Musashi University | Tokyo | To be announced | 15 June – 3 July 2026 |
These programmes include academic coursework, field visits, and opportunities for cultural immersion. According to JGU, the expansion aims to deepen student exposure to governance, technology, society, sustainability, and Japan’s broader academic ecosystem.
In its statement, JGU stated that the launch of these programmes aligns with a decade of expanding India-Japan diplomatic and educational cooperation. Over the past 10 years, government-level engagements have included multiple summits and agreements focusing on education, culture, technology, and mobility.
The Japan-India Joint Vision for the Next Decade, signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in August 2025, emphasised education partnerships and youth exchanges. This broader context, according to the university, has enabled Indian institutions to pursue deeper academic collaborations across Japan.
JGU presently maintains more than 25 institutional partnerships in Japan, one of the largest networks operated by an Indian university. Partner institutions include the University of Tokyo, United Nations University, Chuo University, Doshisha University, Ritsumeikan University, Osaka Gakuin University, Hiroshima University, University of Yamanashi and others.
The university’s first major Japan-focused study abroad programme took place in 2025 with Temple University Japan, which saw a cohort of 40 JGU students participate.
