Leaders and lawmakers across the global political spectrum Thursday condemned the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old right-wing activist and ally of the United States President Donald Trump. Kirk was fatally shot in the neck while addressing an outdoor event at a Utah university.

Trump described the killing as “a dark moment for America” and called Kirk a “legend and great”. Trump said, “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us.”

Vice President JD Vance wrote, “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.” Former President Joe Biden called for an end to violence in America, and prayed for Charlie Kirk’s family and loved ones. Biden wrote, “There is no place in our country for this kind of violence.”

Kirk, who was a trusted ally of President Trump, had also become a close friend of the Trump family. First Lady Melania Trump called for “compassionate awareness” after the assassination of Kirk as she mourned on behalf of the activist’s two children.

In her first reaction posted on social media, the first lady said, “Charlie’s children will be raised with stories instead of memories, photographs instead of laughter, and silence where their father’s voice should have echoed.”

Melania continued, “Charlie Kirk’s life should serve as a symbolic reminder that compassionate awareness elevates family, love, and country.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Kirk a “lion-hearted friend” of Israel who was killed for “speaking truth and defending freedom”. In a post on X, Netanyahu wrote, “Charlie fought the lies and stood tall for Judeo-Christian civilisation. I spoke to him only two weeks ago and invited him to Israel. Sadly, that visit will not take place. We lost an incredible human being.”

Utah’s Senator Mike Lee called the shooting a “cowardly act of violence” targeting the “champions of freedom like Charlie”. Lee said, “The terrorists will not win. Charlie will.”

Offering his condolences over Kirk’s death, former US President Barack Obama said he and former First Lady Michelle will pray for Kirk’s family, especially his wife Erika and their two young children.

Obama said, “We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy.”
