The intelligence agencies Tuesday sounded an alert over possible intrusion attempt across the international border by Pakistan’s ISI in Punjab, prompting a heightened security preparedness by Punjab Police.

Special check points have been set up on roads leading from the international border with Pakistan to Pathankot and adjoining areas and extra force has also been rushed to the area. “Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police are coordinating in these efforts to foil any attempt to create mischief in Punjab,” said the officer.

Pathankot and adjoining Gurdaspur district have witnessed terror attacks in the past from across the border.

On July 27, 2015, three heavily armed terrorists, dressed in Indian Army uniform, infiltrated from into Gurdaspur from Pakistan (evidenced by GPS data showing entry near the Ravi River border). They began their attack around 5:30 am by hijacking a car, firing on a roadside vendor, attacking a moving Punjab Roadways bus (injuring passengers), and then storming the Dinanagar police station. They also planted five IEDs on a nearby railway track on the Amritsar-Pathankot line, which were later defused.

Seven people, including three civilians and four policemen were killed in the attack. All three terrorists were killed following a nearly 120hour gunbattle led by Punjab Police SWAT, with support from Army and NSG.

On January 2, 2016, heavily armed terrorists from Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), dressed in Army uniforms, breached the perimeter of Indian Air Force base in Pathankot. They abducted a Punjab Police officer’s vehicle en route. The gunbattle lasted several days, with combing operations extending to January 5.
