Christmas celebrations prompt traffic diversions, road closures for two days in Pune Camp area

The traffic changes will be in force from 7pm on Wednesday and Thursday and will remain in force till the crowds subside.

The Pune city traffic police have notified traffic changes and road closures to be enforced in Pune Camp area on Wednesday and Thursday in the evening for the Christmas celebrations, which attract a large number of people on the arterial roads and key connecting streets.

The traffic changes will be in force from 7pm on Wednesday and Thursday and will remain in force till the crowds subside. An order in this regard was issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Himmat Jadhav on Tuesday evening.

Each year, thousands of visitors from Pune and nearby areas visit the Pune Camp and the churches in the area on Christmas Eve and on the evening of the Christmas Day. The Mahatma Gandhi (MG) Road and its adjoining lanes, which have a large number of food joints and shops, draw heavy crowds for these celebrations and shopping.

The traffic coming from Y Junction to MG Road will be stopped at the 15 August Chowk and will be diverted via Qureshi Masjid and Sujata Mastani Chowk. The traffic coming from Iskon Temple and going towards Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Statue and Aurora Towers will be diverted via SBI House Chowk, Teen Tofa Chowk and Lashkar police station.

Traffic coming from Volga Chowk to Mohammed Rafi Chowk will be diverted via East Street and India Gandhi Chowk. Traffic from Indira Gandhi Chowk to Mahaveer Chowk will be diverted via Lashkar police station Chowk. Traffic from Sarbatwala Chowk to Mahaveer Chowk will be diverted via Taboot Street Chowk.

Traffic police officials said teams from the local police station and the traffic control branch will be deployed in the Pune Camp and surrounding areas for crowd control and traffic management. The order said these traffic restrictions will not apply to emergency service vehicles, such as fire tenders, ambulances, police and military vehicles on duty.
