The ongoing Miss Universe 2025 pageant in Bangkok, Thailand, has stirred controversy after several contestants reportedly walked out following a confrontation between Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, and one of the organisers, Thai businessman Nawat Itsaragrisil.

Nawat, who currently heads both the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) and Miss Universe Thailand, is also the president of Miss Grand International (MGI). The dispute unfolded on Monday, November 3, during the sash ceremony when Nawat allegedly called the Mexican model a “dumb head.”

Videos circulating on social media show a tense exchange between Bosch and Nawat. Bosch can be heard saying, “We respect you, just as you should respect us. I’m here representing my country, and it’s not my fault you have problems with my organization.” Nawat responded, “No, you must listen to me first, then argue with me.”

Following the argument, Bosch walked out of the room, prompting several contestants including the reigning Miss Universe, Victoria Kjær of Denmark to follow her in solidarity. As the walkout began, Nawat was heard instructing, “Stop. Security.”

Journalist Andrew MacGregor Marshall shared videos of the incident on social media, writing: “Amazing scenes in Bangkok as Miss Universe organiser Nawat Itsaragrisil tries to prevent a mass walkout of contestants after he had publicly berated Miss Mexico.”

Victoria Kjær later issued a statement of support for Bosch, saying, “This is about women’s rights. We respect everyone, but this is not how things should be handled. Insulting another contestant is a huge lack of respect, and I would never do that. That’s why I’m putting on my coat and leaving.”

In response, the Miss Universe Organization released an official statement reaffirming its commitment to respect and safety for all participants:

“The Miss Universe Organization (MUO) reaffirms its commitment to working closely with the host community, the Miss Grand International Organization (MGI), and all local partners to ensure the continued success of the 74th Miss Universe competition. Together, we are dedicated to upholding the highest standards of respect, safety, and integrity for all participants, staff, and stakeholders. A high-level delegation, led by the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mario Búcaro, is traveling to Thailand to strengthen collaboration with the host country, MGI, and relevant authorities. This mission aims to coordinate efforts, ensure a secure and professional environment for all delegates, and reaffirm MUO’s commitment to transparency, respect, and unity. All scheduled events and activities will continue as planned, in full cooperation with the host country and MGl, reaffirming our shared goal of delivering an exceptional global celebration that reflects the values of diversity, empowerment, and inclusion that define the Miss Universe legacy. The Miss Universe Organization remains steadfast in its mission to promote collaboration, respect, and opportunity for women around the world, working hand in hand with all partners to ensure a safe, inspiring, and memorable experience for every.”

What began as a heated exchange between a contestant and an executive could now mark a turning point for the global pageant industry.
