As the Subhash Bridge in Ahmedabad has been shut down by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) after a detailed inspection last week, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has now sought a report on the development, Gujarat government spokesperson and senior minister Jitu Vaghani said on Wednesday.

Vaghani added that the bridge has been shut down till December 25 because it has been found to be “risky”.

Answering a question on the bridge during an interaction with mediapersons, Vaghani said, “The CM has sought a report. I also had a discussion with (Ahmedabad Municipal) Commissioner (Banchhanidhi) Pani. You all know that a crack has developed.”

Vaghani said a “detailed inspection” of the bridge has been done and it was found that there is a crack on its downstream part and also on its slab on the upstream side, as well as on its footpath.

He said several options were discussed, such as repair, partial restructuring, total restoration, winding and building a new bridge.
The minister said that on the basis of a recommendation by the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, and the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), a decision has been taken to shut the bridge till December 25. Vaghani added that the bridge would be reopened “after completion of repair work”.
The bridge has been shut since December 4, significantly impacting vehicular traffic in the areas around it.
