Indo-Canadian appointed as citizenship judge

An Indo-Canadian,who migrated to Canada three decades back,has been appointed as citizenship judge in Vancouver.

An Indo-Canadian,who migrated to Canada three decades back,has been appointed as citizenship judge in Vancouver.

Shinder Singh Purewal,47,member of a Punjabi family in Toronto,was administered oath of the office in both Canadian official languages – English and French – on Wednesday.

Purewal,who arrived in Canada in September 1979 with very little knowledge of English,went on to perfect the language and also committed himself to learning French.

He studied political history at Queen’s University in Kingston,and once interviewed Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau for his master’s thesis on the politics of multiculturalism.

Purewal was just a month-old when his father died. His mother brought him to the country along with his three siblings.
