A 21-year-old Indian man living illegally in the United States was arrested for allegedly causing a semi-truck crash that killed three people in southern California.

Who is the man & what happened

The man, identified as Jashanpreet Singh, was driving a Freightliner tractor-trailer on the I-10 Freeway in San Bernardino County when he slammed into slow-moving traffic without braking, igniting a massive fireball.

The crash, caught on dashcam, left three people dead and several others injured — including Singh himself — and a mechanic assisting with a tyre change.

What police said

According to reports, the police said Singh was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. His toxicology tests confirmed impairment, and he has been charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. “He was eventually transported to the hospital, and he was checked out by the medical staff, and our officers determined he was driving under the influence of drugs,” CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez told ABC7 News.

‘Jashpreet crossed US border illegally’

Quoting sources, Fox News reported Singh first encountered Border Patrol agents in March 2022 in California’s El Centro Sector after crossing the southern US border illegally. He was released into the country pending an immigration hearing under the Biden administration’s “alternatives to detention” programme, which allows certain migrants to remain free while awaiting court proceedings.

The US Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Singh does not have lawful immigration status. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged an immigration detainer against him following his arrest.

Not the lone case

The California incident marks the latest in a series of deadly crashes involving undocumented immigrant truck drivers. In August, another Indian national, Harjinder Singh, who entered the US illegally in 2018, was accused of causing a crash in Fort Pierce, Florida, that killed three people. Investigators said he had failed both English and road-sign tests before obtaining a commercial driver’s licence in California.

Steps taken to curb incidents

In response to these incidents, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described the California crash as “a wake-up call” for states that fail to enforce federal safety standards. “I put states on notice this summer: enforce the Trump Administration’s English-language requirements or the checks stop coming,” Duffy had said on October 15.

Later, the Trump administration announced a $40 million freeze in federal highway-safety funding to California for failing to comply with English-language proficiency standards for commercial truck drivers.
