Hunter Biden also faces three felony and six misdemeanor tax charges in California for allegedly failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019 while spending millions on personal luxuries. (AP/File Photo) Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, on Thursday offered to plead guilty to federal tax charges without admitting any wrongdoing, in an unusual legal manoeuvre that federal prosecutors swiftly opposed.
It was not immediately clear whether the judge presiding over the case would accept the offer or proceed with a trial that could expose embarrassing details of Biden’s life shortly before the 5 November presidential election.
He had previously entered a not guilty plea in the criminal case, which accuses him of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes while spending extravagantly on drugs, sex workers, and luxury items.
Biden was charged in December as part of a broad investigation into his finances and business dealings, making him the first child of a sitting president to face criminal charges.
In the Los Angeles federal court, where his trial was due to take place, Biden attempted to enter what is known as an “Alford plea,” a rare type of guilty plea where the defendant does not admit to the allegations against them.
US Justice Department prosecutors in the courtroom said they would not accept the plea. Federal prosecutors typically agree to Alford pleas only in exceptional cases, and with approval from high-level officials.
