MasterChef India Season 9 premiered on Monday, 5th January. This year, the show features contestants participating in pairs. While judges — chefs Kunal Kapur, Vikas Khanna, and Ranveer Brar — have been meeting with contestants from every corner of India, they are also coming across many heartwarming stories. One such sweet tale of inspiration came from Bikaner’s Parvati Soni, who stepped into the MasterChef India kitchen along with her son, Himansh Soni.
Parvati, who is a professional chef, hails from Bikaner. While she was brought up in a conservative society, life after marriage turned out to be quite progressive. Talking about her journey on the show, Parvati told the judges, “I currently reside in Jaipur, I do a job there at the City Palace’s Indian restaurant owned by the royal family. I am a CDP (Chef de Partie), there for three years. The workforce has 80 men, and I am the only woman in the team.”

Before taking on this job, Parvati was a homemaker who also occasionally helped her husband in his jewellery business. While Parvati came from a home where stepping outside was also not allowed, she found a life partner who wanted to give her wings to fly. Parvati, who had finished her ninth grade, was pushed by her husband to study further, but it was actually her sons who made her take that leap of faith. Talking about the same, Parvati said, “My husband kept insisting that I should complete my education since the time we got married. I had studied till standard nine, so he asked me to finish my schooling and go to college. I come from a conservative society, so I thougt who studies after marriage? When my sons became older, they also kept insisting.”
She further shared that her son, Himansh, actually filled out her Class 10th form when he was to appear for the State Board exams. “My son filled our forms for Class 10.” Himansh also added, “We did our Class 10 and 12 together.” Parvati further added, “Now he wants me to go to IHM (Institute of Hotel Management). My son made me study for the 12th standard via video calls. He used to read the chapter, and I would hear it as a story. My job doesn’t give me the time to study further.”

Sharing her husband’s insisten on how is education important for women, Parvati said, “My husband has struggled a lot from the age of 14. His mother was a Class 8 passout, he made her study till Class 10 along with him.”
Parvati and Himansh qualified through the auditions, but whether they make it to the journey of MasterChef India 9 after clearing the overnight bootcamp is something that remains to be seen. MasterChef India appears on Sony TV and SonyLiv at 9 pm every Monday to Friday.
