In a tragic incident in Taiwan, nine people died from a fire which erupted at a hospital in southern Taiwan, according to local media outlets.

The fire broke out at Pingtung county hospital at around 09:40 local time (01:00 GMT) during which Typhoon Krathon made a landfall in the country’s western region in neighbouring Kaohsiung.

One of the reports added that due to the wet and windy weather, the response time for the emergency services got complicated.

According to BBC, officials suggested that the cause of the fire was still under investigation but Chinese state-run CGTN quoted hospital authorities in a report and said that the combustion of an air compressor in a hospital building’s machine room was the reason behind the fire.

The hospital fire was doused after more than three hours of efforts by the fire fighters team, who were assisted by soldiers from a nearby military base and most of the victims have been reported to be elderly hospitalized patients.

According to media reports, around 300 people were evacuated from the hospital and some of them took refuge in a nearby commercial establishment.

China’s administration also sent condolences after the fire mishap claimed nine lives. The Taiwan Affairs Office of China’s State Council on Thursday sent condolences to the families of the victims and the injured.
