Police and emergency personnel deal with a road traffic accident on Water Street near the Liver Building in Liverpool after a car collided with pedestrians during the Premier League winners parade, in Liverpool, England, Monday May 26, 2025. (AP)A 53-year-old man was arrested on Monday after a car drove into a crowd of people celebrating Liverpool Football Club’s Premier League title in the city centre, according to local police.
The incident took place around 6 pm on Water Street, one of the main stretches along the team’s 10-mile trophy parade route. Thousands of supporters had gathered there to cheer on the players and staff as they marked their 20th league championship a record-equalling tally with Manchester United.
Merseyside Police confirmed in a statement that they were responding to “reports a car had been in a collision with a number of pedestrians.” The vehicle stopped at the scene and a man was taken into custody. Emergency services were still present in the area as of Monday evening.

The North West Ambulance Service said it was supporting the response and working alongside other emergency units to assess the situation and provide care as needed.
The celebration had begun earlier in the afternoon, with Liverpool players including Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk waving to fans from open-top buses under heavy rain. Supporters lit flares and waved flags as the team marked its first public league title celebration since 1990. The 2020 title win had taken place without public gatherings due to Covid-19 restrictions.
“We just want to enjoy this moment because we know how in football things change quickly,” Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker told reporters earlier in the day. “Tomorrow we focus again but for now, we celebrate.”
While the day was meant to be one of joy for Liverpool supporters, the incident cast a shadow over the festivities. Police urged people to remain cautious and promised to release further information as the investigation develops.
